English II Required Reading
During each semester, you will be required to read one book independently. You may choose any book, but it must be approved by me. You will submit your choice at the beginning of each semester using the link below.
For your required reading assignment, you will have a total of four response journal entries.
Reading Bookmark: On the day that your book choice is due, you will bring in your book, and we will divide it into 4 sections. You will note these sections on your bookmark. This will keep you on track for your reading this semester. After the pages per section are written on your bookmark, you will need to take it home and have a parent sign it. I will collect these for a brief time and give you a participation grade for it.
Reading Journal Guidelines:
Each response journal has two parts.
Part 1: You will begin each response journal with a brief (4-5 sentences) explanation of the context - basically a summary of the section you have read - so I know what you are commenting about, but otherwise think of your journal entries as reactions and/or reflections to what you have read.
Part 2: The majority of your response journal should be your reaction/reflection to what you have read, NOT what happened in the book - NO summarizing in this part. This part of your response journal MUST be at least 250 WORDS. Your summary DOES NOT COUNT toward this word requirement. Both WORD and GOOGLE DOCS have a word count feature. It is suggested that you type your journal in one of these programs before submitting your entry. Besides being able to get a word count, you will also be able to edit your entries with the program's spell and grammar check feature.
You MAY NOT choose a book that has been made into a movie.
Note: Submissions are due whether you are in school that day or not.
I have given you some response starters below. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. All work must be original and specifically for this assignment unless prior approval is given. Review the English Department's plagiarism policy if necessary.
REMEMBER: CREDIT WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR SUMMARY OF THE TEXT IN THE RESPONSE PORTION OF THIS ASSIGNMENT!
You may do all the journals before the due dates, but I will not grade them until the due dates. Use the LINKS below to submit each of your Journals. Work not submitted on these links will not be accepted.
POINTS: Book Choice Form (10 pts.)
Journals 1-4 (25 pts. x 4 = 100 pts.)
Total Possible Points: 110 points
Grading will be based on proof of original thought, “readability,” and analysis. The length of your journal and your response, as well as grammar and mechanics, will be taken into consideration when determining the grade for each journal. If you have any questions...you need to ask!
